From Wall Street to Welcoming Spaces: A Q&A with Jessica from Spruill Studio
I’m often asked how, and why, I made the transition from finance to interior design, and how those two worlds, surprisingly, have more in common than you might think. Here's a little behind-the-scenes look at how Spruill Studio came to be, the mindset I brought with me, and what still drives me today.
Meet the Designer: Q&A with Jessica from Spruill Studio
Q: What first drew you to interior design?
A: I’ve always been drawn to residential design; I was the person who wanted to go on every house tour, whether it was a traditional brownstone, a Gilded Age mansion, or a sleek modern build. I’ve always been fascinated by how different eras and styles shape the way people live, and how thoughtfully designed spaces can shift how we feel and function every day.
Q: So how did you make the leap into it as a career?
A: I started out on Wall Street, working in mergers and acquisitions, then moved into product development in asset management. It was intense, fast-moving work. But when I built my own custom home, something shifted. I realized how passionate I was about interiors - about spatial flow, material choices, and how design affects not just how we live, but how we feel in our homes. How beauty, comfort, and a cohesive aesthetic can make everyday life feel more grounded, enjoyable, and fully our own. I went back to study interior design, launched Spruill Studio, and I’ve been loving it- almost every minute- ever since.
Q: Do any skills from your Wall Street career carry over into design?
A: Absolutely. Both careers are deeply project-driven and outcome-focused. Whether I was launching a new mutual fund or now creating a beautifully functioning home, it’s about bringing something meaningful into the world, something that didn’t exist before, and that works for real people. And just like in finance, the details matter enormously. A single overlooked element can affect the entire outcome, which is why I bring the same level of precision and thoughtfulness to every design decision.
Q: What keeps you inspired?
A: The transformation. Good design is powerful. It can completely reshape how someone feels in their home. When a client tells me, “We finally love how our home looks and functions,” or shares their excitement over hosting friends and family in their gorgeous new space, that’s incredibly fulfilling. It means the space not only supports their daily life, but brings them joy and pride in sharing it.
